Hours after Wiscasset School Department's second try at a 2026-27 school budget lost at the polls Sept. 1, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kim Andersson was up early and went online to check out Richmond's school budget and compare it, line by line, to Wiscasset's. The Sagadahoc County town's school budget has been cited by Ed Polewarczyk, a frequent questioner of Wiscasset's school budget.

Literacy volunteers needed in Midcoast, Boothbay area
Midcoast Literacy

Midcoast Literacy, a non-profit that provides free literacy tutoring to people of all ages, is holding two training sessions for new volunteer tutors this fall: one for tutoring children and one for tutoring adult English language learners. Midcoast Literacy serves individuals in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, and northern Cumberland counties, and is seeking volunteers throughout the region.

Mystery Mondays and Any Body Can Sing

In addition to the opportunity to enroll in a variety of classes each term, Coastal Senior College members may participate in free activities on Mondays. “Mystery Mondays” meets on the first Monday of each month, from October to June, at 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Zoom.

To further enhance visitors' experience at the ca. 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, a Timeline of Events has been installed in the ell of the historic cape at the head of Main Street.

The 100-inch chronology, depicted in art and photos, takes one from the first visits of European explorers and fishermen in the 1580s through 1960, when the house was saved from demolition, and 2008 when it was deeded to Lincoln County Historical Association.

UPDATE: Wiscasset’s results official: Sewer move bond yes, school budget no, again

Update: Wiscasset Town Clerk Rebecca Brewer on Wednesday provided the now official results of the Sept. 1 vote. She said 956 ballots were cast (the questions were on two separate ballots); the total number of voters came to 478, including absentee voters; the town has 2,650 registered voters. The wastewater treatment plant move bond question passed with 263 yes votes, 214 no's; and the school budget offer lost with 228 yes votes and 250 no's.

Monday, Sept. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m., Veggies to Table welcomes community members to the farm for Spiral Hand-Tied Bouquet Making, a floral design class celebrating the beauty and abundance of the nonprofit’s flower fields.

Senior College begins series of fall walks

In addition to the opportunity to enroll in a variety of classes each term, Coastal Senior College members may participate in free activities, one of which is the series of Fall Walks. The first Fall Walk will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the National Audubon Society’s Hog Island Camp in Bremen, on Muscongus Bay.

Maine Open Lighthouse Day returns to Burnt Island Light

The public is invited to experience one of Maine’s iconic coastal landmarks during Maine Open Lighthouse Day at Burnt Island Light on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hosted with support from Balmy Days Cruises, the event offers visitors an opportunity to step ashore and explore the historic Burnt Island lighthouse property while enjoying live music and a festive day on the Maine coast.

Throughout the event, guests can tour the Burnt Island lighthouse tower and keeper’s house, gaining a closer look at the history and character of this treasured maritime landmark.

About the bluegrass band Chicken Wire Empire, a reviewer said, "These musicians must enjoy what they do because their joy translates through their instruments." Hailing from Wisconsin, the band has partnered with dozens of artists from all corners of the bluegrass genre, from Sam Bush and Peter Rowan to Vince Herman and Keller Williams. Their forthcoming album features guest appearances from Grammy-winning artists Jerry Douglas and Kyle Tuttle.
